"Michelle Obama is a wonderful woman, but sometimes I think she could use a couple of lessons of style," said the wife of Poland's former president, Aleksander Kwasniewski.

Babies cost money

EU birthrates have hovered near zero. Poland itself had a post-communist low birth rate on top of thousands going to the U.K. to find high paying jobs. The government in Poland started programs to encourage population growth. It worked!

More and more children are being born in Poland, which means that next year the government will spend around 10 million zlotys more than in 2006 on one time payments to families with new borns. In the first half of this year, 227.000 children were born. Throughout the whole of 2006 only 374.000 of them were born – a demographic record in Poland. The government introduced the payments to families, around 350 dollars, as part of its `pro-family' policies to encourage Poles to have more children.

Miss Polonia 2007

Twenty one year old Barbara Tatara from Lodz, central Poland, has been
crowned Miss Polonia 2007.

Barbara, a brunette, is a language student and her vital statistics are
(in centimeters) 86-66-85 and is 176 centimeters tall.

The winner of Miss Polonia, crowned Saturday night at the Congress Hall
in Warsaw, automatically goes on to contest the Miss World final later
this year.

What dumb Polak are you talking about?

Polish high school graduate Tomek Kulczynski was declared the world's junior Information Technology champion at the 19th International IT Olympics in Zagreb, Croatia, last week according to Poland's PAP news agency.

Kulczynski scored 574 points out of 600, beating 284 of the most talented young IT students from 77 countries. Last year Filip Wolski, also a Pole, won the elite competition.

Polish programmers have won a long string of top awards in the field of IT, with Warsaw University ranking as the world champion in the prestigious TOPCODER computer programmer's competition and Poland coming in the second place overall.

Jalapeño Pierogi? No, just Polish style. Thank you.

The World's Biggest Pierogi Festival just concluded in Whiting, Indiana a suburb of Chicago. Who won the best pierogi contest this year? A Mexican born restaurant owner named Jesus Alvarez.

Jesus sells 12 pierogi varieties, but he has added two more at his Whiting dinner. You can get seven pierogi, two side dishes and a roll for $6.29. Other food includes perch dinners, kluski, and stuffed cabbage.

"People come from far away. Just because I come from Mexico, don't think I don't love this food. I love it. This is my life," according to Alvarezowicz.

The Blade & Polish Funeral Directors

Bob Driver writes a newspaper column down in Tampa, Florida. His July 11 column lamented that the St. Petersburg Times transfered control of obituaries to the advertising department from the news department like many dailies did in the past few years.

Here's his last paragraph of the column:

I worked three years for the Toledo (Ohio) Blade, a pretty good paper in its time. But like many newspapers (even the good ones) it had lousy management. One of its newsroom policies was that every reporter – even those who had 10 or 20 years experience – had to write obits. At any moment on any working day, a busy reporter might get the command: “Pick up on Line 1 – Dumbrowski’s got four obits.” (For some reason, most of Toledo’s funeral directors were Polish). Needless to say, the Blade had a high rate of turnover among its reporters. Management finally got smart and assigned all the routine obits to one person, a woman who doubled as a receptionist. I was told she did a superb job. I’m sure the Times has obit handlers just as good as she was.
