Time to Come Home

The outward migration and low birth rate in Poland has the Government encouraging Poles abroad to settle in Poland

A 5-year plan by the government will see the Foreign Ministry working to make settling in Poland more attractive.

“Supporting the teaching of the Polish language abroad, strengthening the positions of Polish communities in other countries, and facilitating the return of Poles home in addition to creating incentives for people of Polish descent to settle in Poland,” are the main aims of the plan.

The plan places a strong emphasis on forming partnerships between the Polish government and expatriate Polish organizations. The project was well received in Polish communities abroad, according to the Foreign Ministry.

In addition to this it is hoped that Poland will be able to cooperate with the countries in which the Polish diaspora resides, including with educational and cultural institutions.

“We fully admit to the fact that our compatriots are usually citizens of other countries and that they owe their citizenship loyalty to those countries. We are also aware that many of our compatriots no longer know Polish and any effective communication with them must be in the language of the country they are living in,” the Ministry explained.

It is thought that Polish diaspora numbers between 18 to 20 million people, with a third born in Poland while the rest are of Polish descent. The single largest community is in the US, with 10 million Americans declaring they are of Polish descent.

Quirky Exports from Poland

Poland is noted for certain exports such as vodka, furniture, industrial components and the like, but there are bunches of quirky stuff too.

A list from the Central Statistical Office includes a variety of unusual products like false teeth, playing cards, globes, beards, eyelashes and braids.


Playing cards were one of the best selling items. They are very popular in France and a number of other EU countries. In this market segment you could say the deck is stacked in Poland's favor.The French bought nearly 620,000 lbs. of playing cards valued at over PLN 5 million. The total value of Polish playing cards sold abroad in 2014 reached 26 million. This is almost as much as the entire Polish exports to Venezuela!

Something Poland can sink its teeth into are a half-million sets of artificial teeth sold to Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and more obscure places like French Polynesia.
  

While Moscow has imposed a ban on Polish apples and other food such as meat and poultry because of rising tensions, Polish companies earned more than PLN 1.4 million for selling decorative globes  to Russia.

Poland exports a lot of beards, eyebrows, eyelashes and braids.

A hair raising amount of Złoty comes from beards, eyebrows, eyelashes and braids and are popular among Nordic nations, especially Norwegians and Finns. In 2014, each of those nations bought more than a ton of these products.

 But, the product seen to the left is still my favorite.

Older than dirt, almost

Up until now the well known Polish Archaeological site at Biskupin founded circa 750 BC was thought to be one of the first organized civilizations in today's Poland.

But, archaeologists made a surprising find in Supraśl, near Białystok in north-east Poland.
The so-called Bell Beaker culture in the Podlaskie region dates back several thousand years.

The dig at Supraśl uncovered some interesting fragments. Previously it was thought that the culture reached no further than what is now southern Poland.


The project is being led by archaeologists from the University of Warsaw and the Museum of Podlasie in Białystok.

The emergence of the Bell Beaker culture is dated to about 4-5,000 years ago. It evolved in Western Europe, in what today is Span. Its name is associated with characteristic dishes in the shape of an inverted bell.

A Beautiful Militia

Poland is known for having the most beautiful girls in the world. When it comes to national security and patriotism coming to the defense of Poland runs deep in the veins of even women who could easily be world-class models.

I could offer a long diatribe comparing the love of country in Poland versus the United States, but those with half a brain can easily figure it out for themselves.

In 1862, Marie Zakrzewska, M.D., opened doors to women physicians who were excluded from clinical training opportunities at male-run hospitals, by establishing the first hospital in Boston and the second hospital in America run by women, the New England Hospital for Women and Children.

She enrolled at a traditionally all-male medical school, Cleveland's Western Reserve College, in 1854. She was one of only six women admitted to the school during the 1850s.

Pole leads Trump to top of Polls

Leading Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has assembled a team of seasoned political strategists and campaign staffers with a brilliant Polish-American at the top.

Corey Lewandowski has been riding the Trump bandwagon since January managing a campaign that is receiving more media attention than any other candidate in either party. Lewandowski’s campaign leadership has induced migraine headaches in many old-line conservative Republicans especially since Trump is way ahead of the others in polling data.

Lewandowski left a short stint at the Republican National Committee in 2001 and wound up at the Koch brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity where his job was assisting New Hampshire Republicans before becoming national campaign manager for Trump.

In that very important primary state, Matt Ciepielowski another Polish-American was hired to manage a team of full-time Trump staffers heading into the primary election there.

In the manner of Trump, Lewandowski won a reputation for getting things done - even at the cost of decorum. "Corey is a pretty aggressive guy on issues. He was a go-getter and he was not afraid to air out an issue,” according to a Granite State lobbyist.

Lewandowski comes at a pretty penny. His income comes close to a quarter of a million dollars annually. The 40-year-old Lewandowski supports a family of six and resides in a spacious home valued at over $800,000.

The grandson of a union printer, Lewandowski grew up impoverished in Lowell, Massachusetts, playing pond hockey in the winters. He went on to graduate from the city's branch of the University of Massachusetts.

Inspired by U.S. President Ronald Reagan's work-hard version of the American dream, Lewandowski became an active Republican and moved to Washington after graduation working on Capitol Hill while earning a master's degree in political science at American University.

With Trump’s popularity among Republican voters guided by Lewandowski and seemingly being impervious to controversy – even rival Jeb Bush has called his candidacy a "phenomenon”.

Concerning Lewandowski, Jerry DeLemus, a Republican activist in New Hampshire says, "He certainly wouldn't be supporting Donald Trump if he didn't believe in him." 


Corey Lewandowski was terminated as Trump's campaign manager Monday, June 20 at a regular campaign strategy meeting held at Trump Tower in Manhattan. While Lewendowski served Trump well in the heated primary season - preparing for the Republican Convention in July and the General Election in November, Paul Manafort will assume responsibility for the campaign henceforth. There has been reason to believe that Trump's adult children were the force behind Lewandowski's ouster.  One senior Trump aide told The Associated Press that Lewandowski was forced out largely because he wasn’t getting along with Republican National Committee members and GOP officials. But a rumor persists Lewandowski was “caught red-handed” trying to place a negative story about Ivanka’s husband (Trump's son-in-law) in the press.


Donald Trump praised Lewandowski for performing admirably but said it was time for a change. “He’s a good man. We’ve had great success,” he told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “But I think it’s time now for a different kind of a campaign.

More NATO Troops Wanted

President Elect Duda

Andrzej Duda, who takes office next week as Poland's newly elected President, says his top priority is to have NATO troops and armaments permanently stationed in Poland as a safety guarantee.

His remarks to state operated TVP television suggest he will continue Poland's current pro-Western policy and ties within NATO, especially in the face of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine between government troops and Russia-backed separatists. his position was significant because Duda comes from the euro-skeptic opposition Law and Justice party, which vows to stand up for Poland's interests internationally if it wins Oct. 25 general parliamentary elections.

Duda also said that he would like next year's NATO summit in Poland to approve a permanent placement of NATO troops and armaments in Poland.  "The expectation is to have this [NATO] presence strengthened because it is one of the guarantees of our safety,'' Duda said.

He goal is also to upgrade the Polish army to a level that will "require respect.''

250 tanks and armored vehicles pledged by US

Earlier this year, it was announced the U.S. will place 250 tanks and armored vehicles in Poland and some other regional NATO members that feel at risk from Russia. But, given that Obama cancelled a missile defense shield approved by the Bush administration, Duda may have to wait until America's presidential election in 2016 to feel comfortable with western commitments.

On domestic issues, Duda said his presidency will be "dynamic'' and he will travel and meet people to hear their problems, just like he did it in his successful campaign.Duda's concern for those who feel they've been left out of Poland's economic boom is believed to be the main reason for his presidential victory.

In his first decisions, Duda said, he will seek to reverse a recent retirement age increase and give the poorest new tax exemptions.
