Young self absorbed Poles don’t have a clue. Those under the age of 30 can’t remember the communist era of failed socialism when it was very difficult to even obtain either legitimately or on the black market a roll of toilet paper to wipe their dupki.
Today, the land of plenty that is Poland is a far cry from the harsh realities of life behind the Iron Curtain. The Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw serves as custodian of the Polish historical record during the 60-year span of Nazi occupation and communist dictatorship. With such rapid positive change since 1989 when hard won free elections signaled the end of tyranny and oppression, does the younger generation grasp how tough life was for their parents and grandparents?
In Gdansk, the birthplace of Solidarność, a remarkable museum called Roads to Freedom reconstructs the country’s post-war history in such realistic fashion that visitors could be forgiven for thinking they’ve been beamed back into a time warp.
